A few studies in charcoal and pastel on ink-stained paper

Craig Houghton September 13th, 2007

I think I’m going to start a series consisting of isolated areas of the body. At the very least, it’ll be good practice.

I couldn’t sleep, so I did some test runs. pastel and charcoal on ink-stained hot press watercolor paper. small, around 5×4 or so each

Packaging Finally Out

Craig Houghton April 29th, 2007

Nothing cheers one up like finding out that your work is now in Walmarts across the country. I’ve been waiting for over a year for this drawing to show up on one of their new packages. They purchased the rights for three images, but this is the first one I’ve seen out. Originally this was going to go on a different kit, but I’m just glad to see it in-store.

A Very Navel Orange

Craig Houghton March 27th, 2007

ok. here’s something very, very different. I made an incredibly low-tech super-messy animation just to give it a try. It’s done in the animators medium of choice, vine charcoal! And, I rerendered each frame to make it extra-jumpy!

it sucks, but it was just a proof-of-concept

brown-headed cowbird

Craig Houghton January 5th, 2007

Blog’s open.

Last weekend I was impressed with a floral from Susan Dorothea’s book, Draw Like Da Vinci. I tried her technique, using a pastel pencil in place of the goldpoint. I built up the whole structure with the gold, worked over the darker values with a charcoal pencil, and used a General’s white charcoal to finish it off. I think I’ll revisit the technique. I’m looking trying out some of the book’s silverpoint suggestions as well.

I originally had some text there, but my handwriting is awful. I cloned it away in Painter afterwards.
