Levers and Pulleys

As a self-taught artist, Craig Houghton has grown as an artist through the study of masterworks, books, and from-life observations. He paints and draws from-life constantly and continues to study the nude figure through weekly drawing groups.

He works across a great number of mediums, finding six or seven different ways to say the same thing. He has specialized only in the understanding and expression of his subjects — having an in-depth understanding of so many mediums allows him the freedom to choose the style and medium appropriate to a given work. His work regularly includes watercolor, soft pastels, oil pastels, charcoal, oil paint, acrylics, egg tempera, ink, graphite, and even digital artwork painted using a stylus and tablet.

For inspiration he looks to the works of Robert Tracy, David Leffel, Robert Vickrey, Carl Larsson and N.C. Wyeth.

Beyond visual art, he enjoys fiction writing and philosophy. He currently lives in Connecticut.
