Review of The Waves by Virginia Woolf

The Waves The Waves by Virginia Woolf

My rating:
4 of 5 stars

I have no idea how many times I would have to read The Waves before failing to discover something new. Woolf layers evocative images so thickly that a reader must linger as long on a sentence as they otherwise might with an entire page of typical prose. It’s poetry, good poetry, and it should be approached as such.

That said, I don’t really feel I connected emotionally to the novel. Perhaps I will on a second reading. The characters, each a sort of facet of the author herself, were all a little out of my reach. I think Woolf did a little too well in presenting them as one mass; I saw them as such, and I’ve never been a fan of crowds.
